Scams to watch for
If something on this list matches what is happening, call one of the numbers above.
- IRS or Government ImpersonationDemands payment by gift card, wire, or crypto ATM with a threat of arrest or benefit loss.
- Grandparent Scam ("AI-cloned voice")Caller sounds like a relative in trouble and asks you to keep it secret from family.
- Romance / Military ImpersonationOnline relationship that has never met in person, now asking for money for emergencies.
- Crypto ATM CoercionAnyone telling you to withdraw cash and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM is running a scam — there is no government program that does this.
- Contractor FraudDoor-to-door pitch with a 'today only' price and a demand for cash up front. Especially after storms.
- Power-of-Attorney AbuseFamily member with POA is moving money or changing accounts without the senior's clear consent.
- "Move Your Money" Bank ScamCaller claims to be your bank and asks you to move money to a 'secure' account. Real banks never do this.
Your rights under Maryland law
Three laws to know if money was taken or someone was hurt.
- Maryland SAFE Act (2021)If someone exploited an older adult financially, you can sue for THREE TIMES the money lost. The other side may also have to pay your attorney's fees. You have 5 years from discovery to file.
- Vulnerable Adult Banking Protection Act (2025)Maryland banks can delay or freeze suspicious transactions involving older adults without facing a lawsuit for doing so. Ask the bank's fraud department.
- SB 8 (2026) — AI Voice ImpersonationUsing AI to imitate someone's voice for fraud is now a Maryland crime. If you got a 'grandparent in trouble' call that sounded like a real person, report it to the State's Attorney's Office.
